FATHER'S DAY EVENT ON ROUTE 66

GREAT FATHER'S DAY EVENT ON ROUTE 66 IN MISSOURI

Anytime is a good time to “Get your kicks on Route 66”, but the end of June will be truly special. Local residents and vacationers traveling the iconic Mother Road may see some amazing autos as they travel the highway. The Hemming’s Motor News Great Race Presented by Hagerty, has chosen “Get your kicks on Route 66” as their theme this year. The race, from June 20-28, will start in Kirkwood, Missouri with 120 antique & vintage cars, trucks, and motorcycles built before 1972, on their way to Santa Monica, California. With the worldwide popularity of Route 66, there will be a larger number of racers from outside the United States in this cross-country, timed, controlled-speed, and endurance rally. The goal of each driver and navigator is to pass 4 to 7 checkpoints each day at a specific time and points are added or deducted for how close they are to that time. The winner is the team with the lowest overall score. The total purse for the race is $150,000 along with bragging rights and trophies.

The racers will leave Kirkwood, Missouri on June 20th at 1-minute intervals stopping for lunch in Rolla, Missouri and the first overnight stop here in Springfield, Missouri “The Birthplace of Route 66”. The racers will line up in front of the Route 66 Convention & Visitor’s Center along St. Louis Street, the original Route 66.

What better place to bring Dad for Father’s Day then the finish line at 4:30 P.M. on June 20th, as the drivers enter the city. The best part is you can see the race cars, visit with the drivers, navigators and support crews, purchase Great Race memorabilia, visit with local car clubs exhibiting their historic cars, taste the local food, purchase Route 66 items, hear great music, and learn the history and points of interest of Springfield, Missouri Route 66 at the information booths. This is sure to be a treat that he and the family will remember forever.

This is a Free Family-Friendly event open to the entire Queen City community. Bring a lawn chair, watch and cheer at the several “Pit Stops” along St. Louis Street from the Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven Motel to the Discovery Center and see these classic vehicles cruise by on their Historic Route 66 Cruise to downtown Springfield, Missouri.
